Cybersecurity and Digital Transformation in Taiwan’s Armed Forces

As regional tensions and the global security environment evolve, cybersecurity has become a cornerstone of Taiwan’s military modernization and digital transformation. According to public data, in 2024 government institutions in Taiwan faced an average of 2.4 million cyberattacks per day, more than double the previous year. These attacks range from large-scale DDoS incidents and vulnerability scans to infiltration attempts and social engineering, highlighting the growing complexity and persistence of threats. Current Challenges

The digital transformation of Taiwan’s armed forces, from logistics management to C4ISR battlefield systems, has created new opportunities for efficiency but also new risks:

Operational Continuity Under Pressure: DDoS and malware attacks can disrupt mission-critical systems.

Supply Chain Security Risks: Hardware or software components with unverified origins may compromise overall system trustworthiness.

Information and Cognitive Warfare: Disinformation campaigns continue to undermine public trust and the decision-making environment.

Future Directions

To address these challenges, military cybersecurity development will focus on:

Strengthening System Resilience: Adopting zero-trust architecture and layered defenses to ensure continuous operations under attack.

Securing Digital Transformation: Embedding cybersecurity into cloud adoption, system integration, and AI applications.

Smarter Cyber Operations: Leveraging AI and big data for faster threat detection and incident response.

Cross-Domain Collaboration: Building a comprehensive defense network through cooperation with government, industry, and academia.
